The Blessed State of The Righteous

“…The generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches will be in his house…”  Psalm 112:2-3 (NKJV)

It’s a healthy habit to stop and take stock of your life. When you look at your peers, family members, and relatives, there are reasons to be grateful: lift your hands and say, “Praise the Lord.”

I was born nine years after my mother got married. I was told that her life during those years was not enjoyable, mainly because of an uncaring family member, but I thank God for her. Her faith in God helped to set me on a path that led to what God had prepared for me to do in His Kingdom.

As a result of her obedience to God, I received the education necessary for the task that was predestined for me. I learned from her that whenever she became pregnant, she would read her Bible. Therefore, she read it three times during her child-bearing years. I often thought of our lives as siblings and realised that no matter how far we stray from God’s path, we always return. My mother was a woman of prayer. She had her Bible and a special notebook that was kept in a specific place. Her routine was to read, make notes, and write prayers for members of the family.

When I read Proverbs 31:19-20, I remember her: “She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, yes she reaches out her hands to the needy.”(NKJV)

My mother was a seamstress. She made clothing for her family and became a household name in the community. It was known that if you didn’t have all that you needed to pay, you could approach “Mother Weekes,” and all will be well. Her lifestyle attracted the young and the seniors. Her strong faith in God, her pleasant personality, her willingness to help, and her words of positive advice caused her to be a lighthouse that beckoned all.

During a time of reflection with a sibling, I learned that Mom, during her senior years, had begun to pray that entrepreneurial skills would emerge in the family. Her prayers were answered. She did not live to see its fulfillment, but as a family, we raised a “Hallelujah.” In the second and third generations, the answers to her prayers are evident. The words of Psalm 112:1-3 are visible to us as a family. There’s no denying the power, truth, and accuracy of the principles of God’s Word.

Today, I can testify that if you stand on God’s promises, you will never fail. Regardless of your beginning, your family background, and the challenges you may face along the journey of life, trust God to show you great and mighty things. I am grateful for the family that God chose for me. The legacy that was left for the generations will be practised and made known as we continue to celebrate our predecessors.

Prayer

Lord, I am grateful to You for all Your blessings in my life: to be covered by Your blood and to have Your presence wherever we go as a family. Help us to celebrate life and endeavour to leave a family legacy that represents You. Let our lives show forth Your praises. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
